Two very different wardrobes can be seen
below.
1). Wardrobe for a young woman's bedroom
The wardrobe has been custom made according to the wishes
of Rachel. At the time of taking the
photograph, it required a
cornice along the top to finish it off. The
cornice will
be a copy of the existing picture rail (moulding). and fixed
at the same height.

General description
Both cabinets are lit within whenever the doors are
opened. There is also a light in the central section with a
switch behind Dopey! In the right hand cabinet are hanging
rails. At the bottom are pull out wire baskets for shoes.
In the left hand unit is small hanging rail, jewellery
trays, holders for tennis and squash racquets.
The construction material is MDF. The finish is spray
painted two coats of primer followed by two coats of
eggshell yellow. The blue panels were sprayed on top of the
previous four coats to give a really smooth and deep colour.
The spraying was undertaken using a high volume low
pressure (HVLP) spray gun. Unlike conventional spray
guns a low pressure delivers the paint to the surface
with little waste to the atmosphere. This type of spray gun
is now widely used in America where legislation exists
to reduce the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC's)
being discharged into the atmosphere.
2). Very Large wardrobe for the master
bedroom.
The photographs below
are of a very large wardrobe made from 5 discrete units.
Total length of the wardrobe is 3.4 metres. Height is
2.1 metres.
The brief was to keep things very simple yet elegant
within a house that is Edwardian and almost 100 years old. The doors
have been made with "a nod" towards the design
of the bedroom door. There
is a drawer at the bottom of each unit - principally for
shoes. Three of the units
have a sliding tray in them. Each unit has a singe hanging rail.
BTW.... The blue blanket on the bed was to protect the
rather nice cream duvet from damage during
construction, and what appears as a peculiar speckling around the
chandelier is in fact light scatter from the camera's flashgun
...
3.
Luxury Cottage Wardrobe
For a small cottage, a country style
wardrobe with lots of luxury features .
Above left. Difficult to
get to, the customer had had problems finding a
wardrobe that would: ( a ) pass through the
front door and up the stairs and ( b ) fit into the bedroom.
The drawer fronts and doors are made using
tongue and grooved softwood. The finish is (HVLP see above)
spray painted "Slaked Lime" eggshell finish acrylic paint to
give a soft neutral finish. Soft close high quality
"blum" hinges" ( as used by Poggenpol et al) are used.
Above right. The left and right hanging
bays are lit when the relevant door is opened. On the
left hand door is a full length mirror that has been
foil backed so, the silvering will NEVER degrade. Should be
common practice for mirrors generally
(bathroom mirrors in particular)
but rarely is. On the right hand door are
tie/scarf racks. The lighting is set into the
upper surfaces of each bay.
Popular practice is
often a
bare 15x bulb
(like those found in fridges)
simply screwed
onto the upper surface just behind the door.
The
three drawers at the bottom have full heavy duty (i.e. will take up to 45 kilos) extension
runners meaning that; the back of the drawer comes
right out to where the door is ( rather like a filing
cabinet) and are intended for shoes
- lots of them !
Above left and right.
Five drawers all heavy duty with full extension
runners and with shelving above.
Above right. The upper cupboards all have a
stay mechanism that allows the users to open the door as
much or as little as is required. In the final stages of
closing, the "over centre" mechanism pulls the front lid in and
holds it shut.
4.
Luxury Wardrobe
American Ash
A large wardrobe made using
American Ash. to produce a piece of furniture in the
Shaker style .
The two central bays are
divided for shorter garments, longer garments hang in
the two end bays. The bays are lit with low voltage lighting
as and when the relevant door is opened.
The doors use self
closing hinges with "Blum" buffers meaning that, the doors will
fully close when given a gentle push and in the final stages
they are slowed by pneumatic buffers so that their final
closing is silent. The top doors are fitted with stays and
will stay open at any angle for as long as the user requires
it.
