Stairgate
General description
The brief was for a quality wooden stairgate that
would swing through 180 deg . In the picture below you
can see the gate swung back against the landing balustrade.
The gate has been made from American Cherry. It is hung on
"soss" hinges. Tricky to fit and very expensive, their
principle advantage is that they "disappear" when the
gate/door is closed.
Photo below: The gate in the closed
position. No sign of the hinges.

Photos below : Below left, looking up the stairs,
the wooden catch can be seen. As there is a lot of wood in
the house it seemed a shame to fit a rather basic
metal catch on so, I made this one. The body and bolt
of the catch were turned up on my lathe ( see
Finials) the slots were
machined by fitting the body into a jig and by moving
the body around BELOW a router, much as metal might be
milled on a vertical mill.
