Copies of London pattern doors

The brief was  to make 2 x copies of the doors in a house that had recently had an extension put on..

An existing door Copies being made up. Here you see the muntins (centre vertical pieces of timber that divide the panels) with their coving and machined to take the panels. No applied mouldings here!! Completed copy - upside down - but nevertheless with unusual proportions. One of the two copies in place, leading to the new ensuite bathroom.

General description

The existing doors were photographed and their proportions measured up very carefully. All joints were to be through mortise and tennons and wedged as per the originals.

The principal difficulty was colour matching. Two water based dyes and an appropriate mix was finally selected. A mix sufficient for both doors was prepared.  Water dyes tend to accentuate the grain better than spirit dyes. The finish was satin polyurethane sprayed on and cut back after both the first and second coat.
