The table had to hold a 12 place set of
cutlery that, while very nice, had been
sold in a presentation case that was made from
MDF.
The table had to be fairly narrow and the
entire table had to be reasonably stable with the
drawers fully extended.
Each drawer has two layers .
In its natural state American Cherry is not very exciting and is very pink (see other cherry items on this
site) . In time it will darken down but
not everyone is prepared to wait. A water based stain has been applied to
(a) artificially age the piece and (b) accentuate the grain. The finish is Danish oil, some
ten coats of it albeit cut back frequently and
severely to produce a mirror finish.
There is some staff beading work on the legs and
rails, and because the stain and then the oil
tend to build up in the beading,
there is as a result a sense that the
piece is rather older than it is.
